2009-05-20 005Both Marshall Middle School and High School have a tradition of involving the kids in a some kind of community service during the year. This year’s service day was during the half-day on Wednesday, and both of the girls were signed up to help their respective schools.

Clare was assigned to a classroom in her building that needed a fresh coat of paint. I was charged with picking her up at the end of the day, and she looked like this. Who would have been surprised if they ran out of paint? “Gee, I’m not sure where it all went.” Maybe some of it ended up on the walls…

blog photo Hannah was part of a group that had an ambitious outdoor project. Between the high school and elementary school is a path on a hill. In an attempt to make the trail a bit safer, their task was to remove the grass, level each step, drop in a horizontal post,  cinder block end caps, then cover it with crushed rock. Ugh. Looking at the finished product, I’m impressed! Her footwear choice for the day? Flip-flops, of course.

Some may call it free labor. Administration and staff like to think of it as a form of class bonding. It’s probably a little of both.
