WIAA football playoffs, round 1

Marshall High School finished the football season tied for first in the Capitol conference this year. Well done, boys. This gave them a #2 seed in their bracket in the Division 5 state football tournament. Tuesday night they hosted the Random Lake Rams (grandpa’s alma matter) in first-round action.

Marshall had the first scoring opportunity, but the kicker missed a tough-angled field goal. Random Lake then went the length of the field and scored the first touchdown of the evening. Little did they know they wouldn’t score again until the game was well in hand. By half-time, Marshall was up 20-7 and was rolling. By the fourth quarter the Cardinals were playing more and more underclassmen as they took a 40-7 lead. Random Lake scored a late touchdown to bring the final score to 40-15.

2008-10-28 008 I remember seeing pictures of my dad in his high school playing days in the early 1960’s. Their uniforms had the traditional ram horn logo on the helmet. I was disappointed when I saw them warming up with a script “Rams” on their helmets instead.

Next up, conference rival Cambridge at Marshall Saturday night. I’m sure we’ll be there.

2008-10-28 008 The other reason for attending was to watch the band perform their field show at half-time. After getting rained out during the final regular-season home game, they were fortunate to have another opportunity during this first playoff game. Hannah plays clarinet and was stunning in her field uniform (in the middle). Cold as it was, her fingers were a little slow on the instrument, but they sounded great.
