Hannah’s first tournament

As I’m sure I mentioned previously, Hannah, too, is playing club volleyball this winter. It’s her second year spending the off-season getting more playing time and improving her skills. It proved extremely valuable for her last year when she stepped on the court as a freshmen and was a leader on the JV team.

Playing essentially at home this past Saturday, 3 of the 15s teams from Midwest Juniors participated in the Midwest Tournament Series at MATC. The girls on the Royal team started slow but really improved during the course of the day. Due to some recent player shuffling, they haven’t played nor hardly practiced together leading up to this tournament. They finished at the bottom of their pool and were eliminated early in the afternoon playoffs. I give them credit for playing hard in every game and never giving up.

2009-01-24 035 If you’ve been to these tournaments before, you know that the girls are expected to referee other matches throughout the day. Late in the day Hannah was a line judge. Our club has a rule that when judging, players will not use cell phones nor headphones. I couldn’t resist snapping this picture (and I must emphasize) PRIOR to the start of the final match in the consolation bracket. “I’m so clever! They can’t see my phone shielded behind this flag.” In her defense, the phone didn’t come out at all during the match. She knows better.

Next week will be really fun. Clare is at a local tournament, Hannah is away at a separate tournament, and we have a UW men’s hockey game at the Kohl Center that evening. It will be a minor miracle if we see the opening puck drop, but we’ll sure try.
