What is Twitter?

In a word – or a short phrase – Twitter refers to micro-blogging. Whereas “regular” blogging is like what you’ve been used to in this space, micro-blogging is short blog posts in between regular blog posts. Huh?

This video does a much better job of explaining it:

Really? People do this? And like it? Really?

Not wanting to be left out, about a week ago I decided to give it a try. What kind of things go in a Twitter entry? (Humiliatingly, they’re called Tweets.) How about, “I’m watching the Badger hockey blog right now – and we’re losing 2-0.” Or, “Monica left for her weekend with her teacher team to Sturgeon Bay and I can hear the kids upstairs. Not good.” Or, “Oh, crap, now we’re down 3-0.” I guess those would qualify.

I’ll admit there’s a strange sense of community around watching/reading other Twitter posts. I’ve added many of the tech folks that I listen to on various podcasts to my watch list, and it’s pretty neat to see what they do when they’re not on air.

Frankly, it’s more fun to read what other people are doing than entering my own posts. What the heck – I’ll keep doing it for a while. Follow me either on the sidebar to the right (coming soon) or on twitter.com/schommer.
