Day 1 – Destination, Des Moines

The first leg of our journey takes us to Des Moines, IA, where we planned to spend some time with Jim and Sandy.

Along the way, we stopped in Dubuque where we got out and watched the water flow along the Mississippi River. Indeed, it’s a big river. I’ve been playing around a little with some photo stitching applications, so I took some pics of the main bridge that I’ll stitch together when we return.

A couple of fuel stops along the way and we were in Des Moines by 3:30 or so. The timing was such that we decided to check in before heading to our friends.

Very impressed with our hosts’ technological setup. The coolest part we saw was a Mac Mini hooked up to the LCD TV in the main living area. A wireless bluetooth keyboard controlled it all and we watched a little Hulu before jamming out on the new Guitar Hero Smash Hits on their Xbox 360. And it was literally a neat setup. They seemingly went to great lengths to hide wires and cables and make it visually pleasing. My electronics should be so neat.

We planned on meeting the rest of our travelling crew at the hotel later that night, and they showed up right on time. The plan was to caravan together west to the Rockies the following morning. So far, so good. Big travelling day tomorrow.
